I started dancing ballet when I was 9 years old and still doing it until today. When I turned 15, I was forced into Latin by my parents because they were dancing themselves as well. But soon after that I began falling in love in Latin. That is how I started to have the urge to compete whether it is locally or overseas representing Malaysia. I achieved quite a number of titles in the Latin scene of Malaysia.

When I was 15 years old I started off Partnering Benjamin Lee and competed in my first competition in Singapore in the beginner event and managed to get 4th placing. However the partnership ended right after that and I found myself a 2nd Partner; Jonathan Fam. Together with Jonathan we have successfully achieved to be the 2003 International Junior Under 16 Latin Champion, 2003 International Pre Amateur Latin Champion and also Top 3 for Amateur Malaysian Closed Latin Category. Sadly, in 2004 the partnership ended.

Lucky enough I found myself another partner; Adrian Chin and achieved most of my major titles in my dancing line. We turn out to be the Champion for Malaysian Latin Amateur Closed Champion in the year 2004, 2005 and 2007. MDA (Malaysian Dance Association) also sponsored and gave opportunities for us to represent MDA (Malaysia) to countries like Sri Lanka, China, Hong Kong, Philippines and Singapore to compete.

After October 2007, Adrian and I ended the partnership as he have other priorities in life because he was getting married then. I was bumbing around, continuing my ballet and learning other form of dances as I could not find myself a partner. So happen in the year 2008, So You Think You Can Dance season 2 was back. Me and my friend; Billy Yong just made an abrupt decision the night before to go for the audition.

We auditioned and we got through Bootcamp, Top 35 and then Top20. Sadly Billy Yong got eliminated on the first week but I endured on in the competition and won the competition itself.

Though at that moment, my main target was getting up to Top10 only but I am surprised and shocked to even manage to get into Top4. Winning the SYTYCD season 2 was really shocking. But what I know for sure is, I put my mind in it, endure it with full of will and determination to do my best week by week. I learn to not give up and I feel satisfaction because I’m improving my knowledge about dances of other genres.

I have learnt so much through the competition that it changed me, still the same girl but with different perception of life and dance. It not only made me grow in dancing but it had made me grow up as a person myself too.

However, after SYTYCD, I was again bumbing around. Did not do any dancing as I was busy back to University life again. At that point, I could not find myself a partner in Latin and somehow I don’t know why I have lost the urge to dance. It was probably by far the saddest point of life in my dancing career. I lost my soul in dance and wanted to give up totally. Personally I feel, winning the title was easier than maintaining it. I didn’t know how to maintain it that’s probably why everything went upside down. (A feeling that is very hard to explain by words)

One fine day, I woke up having this weird aura in me telling me to chase after what I really wanted. I just stood up and started planning. I called up Billy Yong and asked him whether is he interested in partnering me. He said Yes and we went and find for a dancing school and started training all over again as we both have stopped competitive latin for approximately 1 ½ years. Though we weren’t champions but in a short 3 months of partnership we managed to be Grand Finalist for Malaysia Ranking Latin Championships this year.

Again, things did not work well between us and we ended our partnership in September. And now I got myself a new partner and we both have the same goal in mind to achieve. Though it is a new partnership but this time I can see clearly the path we are linking into and I am very sure that many more achievements would be able to reach in this new partnership.

CC... Speaks Serious & Not So Serious Dance Stuffs....
1)      How would you describe the current dance scene in Malaysia?
Honestly, i think the current dance scene in Malaysia is growing very slowly. sometimes i personally think it is a waste because there are so many young and talented dancers out there whom feel so lost and somehow stuck in the middle whether to pursue dancing further or not.

2)      How are you going to change this?
How??!! I would firstly start with myself, to improve and feed myself with more knowledge about dance and get more exposure outside. Through this, the coming generation that is under me would be able to learn and understand more about dance. These indirectly affect the mindset of the coming generation about dancing and hopefully the industry would move up higher at a faster rate than before.

3)      How would you rate your dancing skills?
I would say, I am still a student and will never stop learning and improving myself no matter how good i turn out to be in the future. I believe dance is very subjective and different people have different perception for dance.
For example - I would prefer watching dancer who might not have the best technique but it is how they dance that matters. Their own unique interpretation that would touch me. Dance through their heart that filled with passion and love.
Cecilia Yong: “I guess everything has already been written and planned... Let it flow as it is...”

4)      What’s the most unusual compliment you’ve ever received about your dancing?
Hahaha... unusual?? I dance Hip Hop with Latin flavor.. I am a Latin Dancer and when i dance hip hop sometimes the usual habit that i do in Latin will somehow come out naturally when I dance other genre... especially hip hop *shy*

5)      Who would you say is your biggest competitor in Msia?
My biggest competitor?? It would be myself. I always put high expectations on myself when it comes to dancing. I want to see improvement and achievements.. However sometimes i do get lazy and laid back as well, and getting through that mindset is actually more difficult than anything else. *smiling*

6)      What’s the most embarrassing/awkward thing that’s happened to you on stage?
I remember in November year 2005, I was competing in a Latin Championship in Penang. I was dancing halfway then suddenly my costume buckle just snapped off.. Luckily I am still able to dance while holding on to the costume till the dance was finish and quickly ran out to get it hooked back in place and tada!!~ i'm out on the dance floor again..

7)      What are your New Year’s Resolutions for 2010?
Take things one step at a time. Going beyond expectations and live every second of my life to the fullest.
*another funny resolution is actually to learn how to cook* hehehehe =P

CC: Definitely everyone would feel drained out and uninspired at many point in life. I felt it too!! My advice would be...Continue being uninspired, explore the uninspired side of you, bump around and feel useless and one day, when the time you wake up from bed, you would realize there are more to life rather than being uninspired... and from then on
even a simple smile by a stranger would inspire you to live every single moment of your life.. Live every moment as every moment only happen once in your whole lifetime.

Pageant winner has plans for future

By FAZLEENA AZIZ

THERE is definitely something sweet about Sino-Kadazan Stella Matilda, 22, from Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.
The young lass, who was crowned 2nd runner-up in the Miss Malaysia Earth 2007 pageant where she represented Sabah, is looking into developing more beautiful talents with her own agency some day.
Cut the stereotype: Matilda feels that the common misconception that those who take part in pageants are dumb should be changed.
She was chosen as Miss Borneo Tourism Queen International 2009, and went on to compete in China for the Miss Tourism Queen International title in August.
The lass has been modelling for about four years and loves to travel and swim during her free time. She has visited Paris, London, Rome and Scotland and hopes to visit more European countries as she finds the culture exotic.
Stella is currently pursuing a diploma in public relations at Kolej Tunku Abdul Rahman in Setapak.
“I am looking at opening the agency after my graduation.
“It will be a platform for girls who want to try their hand at events as well as modelling,” she said.
She also talked about the common misconception that models and beauty pageant contestants are dumb.
“It is very degrading and I hope people would change their mindsets,” she said.
What do you like about KL?
I like the entertainment, shopping malls and cinemas. There are a lot of clubs and concert being held here. We do not get many acts coming to perform in Kota Kinabalu.
What do you dislike about KL?
Of course, the traffic. I hope they would improve the transportation system and roads, which is really bad.
What’s your favourite food?
I like Japanese and Italian food.
What do you do to relax?
I like reading a lot. Right now I am reading about the history of Roman empire. I do think more people should adopt this habit as it expands our knowledge.
What’s your favourite place to hang out in KL?
I like Cineleisure Damansara but I love hanging out at Heritage Row too.
